Ken Wharfe a former royal bodyguard to Princess Diana has told the Diana Inquest that her private conversations were being recorded by the intelligence services. Ken Wharfe, who served Diana for six years, said the “Squidgygate” tapes of Diana speaking intimately to a friend in 1989 were probably made by GCHQ.

Transcripts in which the friend, James Gilbey, called Diana “Squidgy” were published in a national newspaper.

Diana and Dodi Al Fayed died after a car crash in Paris on 31 August 1997.

Security risk

Mr Wharfe told the inquest hearing he believed the surveillance service GCHQ had broadcast the recording of the phone conversation over the airwaves for radio enthusiasts to pick up.

“It’s my belief this internal recording was probably made by GCHQ… they probably had a good reason for doing it,” he said.

“For some unknown reason this conversation is released on a loop to allow (radio enthusiasts)… to pick them up.”

He added that he believed GCHQ were monitoring members of the royal family due to heightened IRA activity at the time.

The recorded conversation took place on New Year’s Eve 1989 while Diana was staying at the Queen’s Sandringham Estate in Norfolk. Mr Gilbey was on a mobile phone.

The inquest continues.

Princess Diana’s former lover, heart surgeon Hasnat Khan, is preparing to reveal intimate details about their two-year affair by giving evidence at the inquest into her death.

Khan has never spoken publicly about his long-running relationship with the princess, who told friends he had been the “love of my life”.

British newspapers said the Pakistan-based surgeon would give his evidence to the London inquest in a written statement.

Khan is believed to be keen for “the whole story” about Diana to be told.

He has refused numerous requests in the past by media outlets to spill the beans on his affair with Diana.

The princess was reportedly keen to marry him, but Khan was reluctant because of concerns that the intense media spotlight surrounding Diana would interfere with his work.

Some witnesses have told the inquest that after Khan and Diana split in 1997 she embarked on an affair with Dodi Fayed to try and make him jealous.

Just weeks later, Diana, Dodi and their driver were killed in a Paris car crash.

However Dodi’s father, Harrods billionaire Mohamed Al Fayed, has claimed that the princess split with Khan because she fell in love with his son.

Diana first met Khan in 1995 while visiting London’s Royal Brompton Hospital.

The relationship ended in 1997.

Khan is expected to be asked at the inquest about two secret meetings he had with Diana while she was dating Dodi.

The surgeon is also believed to have heard Diana’s private thoughts about the royal family and why her marriage to Prince Charles collapsed.

No date has been set for when he will either give evidence in person or via a statement read out to the inquest’s jury.

Heart surgeon Hasnat Khan is reportedly to give evidence about his relationship with Princess Diana at the inquest into her death.

Mr Khan who had a two year relationship with Princess Diana before she met Dodi Al Fayed in 1997 maybe called to give evidence in person or by video link at the inquest.

Mohammed Al Fayed claims that Hasnat Khan’s evidence will be crucial in proving that Princess Diana was intending to marry his son Dodi.

Today at the inquest the jury heard evidence from Rodney Turner, a director of the luxurious car company HR Owen

Mr Turner who claimed to be a friend of Princess Diana’s told the inquest that Diana had told him that her relationship with Dodi Al Fayed was over weeks before the fatal car crash in August 1997 that claimed hers and Dodi’s lives.

Mr Turner told the inquest that Diana had told him “not to fuss” , that she and Dodi had stopped seeing one another.

The Princess Diana Inquest was told today that Princess Diana was being bugged by a team of 5 surveillance officers.

The jury at the inquest heard this afternoon that Princess Diana had been told by friends that the team of surveillance people were part of an “organisation” who had been given orders to monitor her movements.

Details of a meeting that Diana had in 1994 with the head of the royalty and diplomatic protection department used by the royal family were read to the inquest this afternoon.

A note written by a senior protection officer stated that : Diana had been told without any doubt, that five people from an organisation had been assigned to monitor her activities, which included monitoring and listening in to her private phone conversations.

A former protection officer called Colin Haywood Trimming who guarded Princess Diana and Prince Charles and their children William and Harry, told the inquest that he knew that Diana had concerns over her private phone calls being bugged.

During questioning from QC Mr Mansfield , Mr Haywood Trimming said that Paul Burrell a future witness would confirm that it was normal for communications with the royal family to be monitored by the special security services.

Graham Harding who founded a surveillance and security firm told the inquest that he had carried out a sweep for bugging devices at Princess Diana’s royal appartments at Kensington Palace and that he had discovered something he thought might have been a a possible device.

Mr Harding had previously met Princess Diana when he was starting a charity with Sarah , the Duchess of York in 1993 called “Children In Crisis”

When questioned by Nicholas Hilliard who was representing the coroner about his statement that Princess Diana talked of “dark forces” by Mr Harding told the inquest that these were words that Princess Diana used and that she never really said anything more on the subject.

Princess Diana’s relationship with Dodi Fayed was over a few weeks before the couple were fatally injured in a car crash, her inquest was told today.

A personal friend of the Princess Diana’s called Rodney Turnet , who supplied her with luxury cars, said Princess Diana told him not to “fuss” as the pair had stopped seeing each other.di-dodi

Mr Turner also described as a “bombshell” the revelation Diana made in a letter given to her butler, Paul Burrell, that her then husband, Prince Charles , the Prince of Wales, was planning to have her killed.

The HR Owen director struck up a business relationship with the Princess in late 1995 when he began supplying her with BMW cars and they also had a personal contact as he sent his son to the prestigious Eton College public school where Diana’s sons, Princes William and Harry, both studied, the inquest jury was told.

Commenting on Diana’s relationship, Mr Turner told the Inquest hearing in central London: “What she said to me was that it was all over, which was really a shock to me.”

He said the Princess added: “Don’t fuss, don’t fuss. It’s all over. I’ve had a wonderful time.”
